Exciting, Inspiring, Wonderful, Exhilarating, these are just a few of the many words used to describe the Inaugural Tomorrows Children’s Fund (TCF) Join Hands 5K and Family Mile. The day was picture perfect, there were 31 fundraising teams and 589 participants who ran and walked, raising funds for our brave TCF patients and their families. Laughter and cheers filled the air when the Grand Marshal, Today show co-host Hoda Kotb arrived. After spending time with many of our TCF families and friends, Hoda led the runners to the 5K starting point. Families proudly displayed team names on their shirts, survivorship buttons and memorial signs…shouts of encouragement could be heard as the starting gun went off. Run cyclist, Phil Murphy, set the pace as they hit the 3.1-mile route.
During the time between the 5K and Family Mile, numerous kids’ faces were turned into butterflies and superheroes by the artistic face painters, and families took fun pictures in the photo booth. Executive Director, Lynn Hoffman, presented Hoda with a “Thank You” book from our patients, and declared Hoda the Honorary President of the Tomorrows Children’s Fund to an ovation of applause. This was a morning of fun, renewed friendships, heartfelt hugs and a day to support our brave young fighters as they battle cancer or blood disorders. We remembered our Angels with a beautiful poem read by one of our parents. Their spirit will forever live on in the TCF. “I am a Survivor, What’s Your Superpower?” buttons were worn by all of our amazing survivors who came to celebrate winning their own race.
We thank our presenting sponsor, Inserra Supermarkets, along with the 26 other amazing sponsors who supported our first run and allowed us to have this successful, amazing event. Our 59 volunteers helped the day run smoothly, we could not have done without them. We are proud to say that with the help of our sponsors, donors and fundraising teams, we raised $100,000.00!
Join us in 2017, as we grow the Joins Hands 5K and Family Mile into a bigger and better event, and remember the more funds we raise, the more programs we can provide for our incredible TCF patients and their families.
